FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Floating Island ReappearsBoating Hazard Appears Again!11 August 2002 -- Once again the floating island or Bog has reappeared in Woodland Lake. This time it is directly between Skip and Louise Starbird's and the Island, about 2/3 of the way to the island. Pretty much its usual place! It is within a foot of the surface so it does present a hazard to boaters. Someone has been kind enough to mark it with a white float, so it is visible and avoidable. As most who have been on the lake know this is something that we see every year or two. Usually at this time of the year. It is actually a section of the lake bottom that has 'floated' to the surface due to a bubble of gas that is trapped. The gas is from decomposing material trapped in the strata of the lake bottom. The sun and the elevated temperature of the water in the late summer contribute to the decomposition process and the gas is generated faster than it can escape. Thus the bottom 'floats' to the surface. This normally lasts a week or two and will eventually vent and disappear. Thanks to Skip and Louise for letting us know it's back! Be careful and have fun! 18 August 2002 -- It's gone, hopefully for another year! Although the float that someone had attached to it was up on the 17th it was gone by the 18th. Bye, Bye hope we don't see it again until at least next year!
