FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Brighton Township Sewer Odor Problem

January 2003 - The OWL Board writes the following letter to express our opinion as regards the issue:

Sewer Committee

Brighton Township Hall

4363 Buno Road

Brighton, MI 48114

Dear Sewer Committee,

Subject: Temporary solution to sewer odor problem

The Organization of Woodland Lake (OWL) Board of Directors appreciates the Sewer Committee’s efforts to work toward a timely and cost effective solution to the odor problem from the new sewer system affecting the Hilton Road residents.

OWL, however, opposes the use of lake water to flush the system beyond the temporary time frame of June, 2003.  We would like be on record suggesting that, if a more permanent solution is required, alternative methods be used.

The primary reasons for our position are as follows:

Ø       The failure of the check valve and/or air gap could result in raw sewage entering the lake.

Ø       Use of lake water during the hot, dry summer months could reduce the lake level.

Ø       Using the lake’s resources without the riparians’ prior knowledge or consent sets a precident..

We appreciate your prompt attention to this situation.  We are certain you understand that the issues regarding water quality and level are of great concern to Woodland Lake riparians.

Sincerely,

Charles Pendleton

Chairman Sewer Special Projects Committee

Organization of Woodland Lakes

November 2002 - Brighton Township has identified the source of the sewer odor problem for details see their website.

Essentially the problem seems to be that flushing is required in the short term from the two lift stations on Woodland Shore Drive.

On the West side of the bridge they have drilled a well and are using ground water to flush.

On the East side of the bridge the are using lake water to flush.  OWL to address this issue at January 2003 Board meeting.
